=== Acute exposures === In case reports of humans intentionally or accidentally ingesting high concentrations of copper salts (doses usually not known but reported to be 20–70 grams of copper), a progression of symptoms was observed including abdominal pain, headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting and diarrhea, tachycardia, respiratory difficulty, hemolytic anemia, hematuria, massive gastrointestinal bleeding, liver and kidney failure, and death. Episodes of acute gastrointestinal upset following single or repeated ingestion of drinking water containing elevated levels of copper (generally above 3–6 mg/L) are characterized by nausea, vomiting, and stomach irritation. These symptoms resolve when copper in the drinking water source is reduced. Three experimental studies were conducted that demonstrate a threshold for acute gastrointestinal upset of approximately 4–5 mg/L in healthy adults, although it is not clear from these findings whether symptoms are due to acutely irritant effects of copper and/or to metallic, bitter, salty taste. In an experimental study with healthy adults, the average taste threshold for copper sulfate and chloride in tap water, deionized water, or mineral water was 2.5–3.5 mg/L. === Cross-contamination === Perhaps the most controversial debate surrounding the use of pharmacy automated tablet counters is the impact of cross-contamination. Automated tablet-counting machines (sometimes better known as "pill counters") are designed to sort, count, and dispense drugs at high speeds for quick counting transactions. When more than one drug is exposed to the same surface, leaving seemingly unnoticeable traces of residues, the issue of cross-contamination arises. While one tablet is unlikely to leave enough residues to cause harm to a future patient, the risk of contamination increases sevenfold as the machine processes thousands of varying pills throughout the course of a day. A typical pharmacy may on average process under 100 scripts per day, while other larger dispensaries can accommodate a few hundred scripts in that amount of time. Thoroughly cleaning pharmacy automated tablet counters is recommended to prevent the chance of cross-contamination. This method is widely preached by manufacturers of these machines, but is not always easily followed. Performing an efficient cleaning of an automated tablet counter significantly increases the amount of time spent on counts by users. Many critics argue that these problems can easily be prevented by taking the proper precautions and following all cleaning procedures, but the increase in time spent makes it hard to justify such an investment.

Marketers use well-researched techniques to try to control purchasing behavior. The layout of a supermarket is considered by some to consist of a few rules of thumb and three layout principles. The high-draw products are placed in separate areas of the store to keep drawing the consumer through the store. High impulse and high margin products are placed in the most predominant areas to grab attention. Power products are placed on both sides of the aisle to create increased product awareness, and end caps are used to receive a high exposure of a certain product whether on special, promotion or in a campaign, or a new line. The first principle of the layout is circulation. Circulation is created by arranging product so the supermarket can control the traffic flow of the consumer. Along with this path, there will be high-draw, high-impulse items that will influence the consumer to make purchases which they did not originally intend. Service areas such as restrooms are placed in a location which draws the consumer past certain products to create extra buys. Necessity items such as bread and milk are found at the rear of the store to increase the start of circulation. Cashiers' desks are placed in a position to promote circulation. In most supermarkets, the entrance will be on the right-hand side because some research suggests that consumers who travel in a counter-clockwise direction spend more. However, other researchers have argued that consumers moving in a clockwise direction can form better mental maps of the store leading to higher sales in turn.

A band cell (also called band neutrophil, band form or stab cell) is a cell undergoing granulopoiesis, derived from a metamyelocyte, and leading to a mature granulocyte. It is characterized by having a curved but not lobular nucleus. The term "band cell" implies a granulocytic lineage (e.g., neutrophils).
The stringed crowns and the trays used in manual sorting are shown in the figure. The destination tray is moved step by step in the direction of the arrow. The crowns are transferred in groups from the slots of the source tray into the all opposite slots of the destination tray. The transfers are directed by computer and the products are identified by the positions of the crowns occupied on the final strings. A fast automatic sorter machine had also been described. The sorter is outlined in the figure. It has two sets of aligned tubes. The lower ones are step by step moving in the direction showed by the arrow and the coin-like units are dropped from the upper source tubes into the lower destination ones. The tubes may serve as reaction vessels too. A software had also been developed that can direct sorting if not a full combinatorial library is synthesized only a set of its components are prepared that are picked out from the full library.
=== Non-destructive sampling protocols === Although the ammonium bicarbonate protocol should not be considered a non-destructive method, it was followed by more 'true' non-destructive methods. The first of these was the eraser protocol, first tested on parchment, but later also applied to bone. The eraser protocol is performed by rubbing a PVC eraser on a piece of parchment or bone. The friction generates triboelectric forces, which causes small particles of the sample to cling to the eraser waste. From the eraser waste collagen can then be extracted and analysed. The eraser protocol was found to work relatively well for parchment, but it is less effective on bone. Additionally, it leaves microscopic traces on the bone surface, which appear very similar to use wear traces and could be an issue for use wear analysis. A second non-destructive protocol is the plastic bag protocol, first published in 2019. It is based on the idea that the normal friction between an object and the plastic bags, commonly used for storing archaeological objects, might be sufficient to extract enough material for ZooMS analysis. A third protocol uses the same triboelectric principle. However, instead of using an eraser, this microgrid protocol employs a fine polishing film to remove very small amounts of material from a sample. The last non-destructive protocol that has been published for ZooMS is the membrane box protocol. The membrane box protocol is based on contact electrification, which is the generation of electrostatic forces due to small localised differences in charge between two objects.

=== Data breaches and COVID-19 impact (2020–present) === Because of the COVID-19 impact, PGCPS schools went through lockdown after March 13, 2020. The 2020–21 school year was online during the year until April 2021 with hybrid learning. The 2021–22 was virtual for some and in-person for some. Because of COVID-19 cases increasing during late 2021, PGCPS went through online school mode again until January 18, 2022 for in-person students and January 31, 2022 for virtual students to go to in-person school. On August 14, 2023, PGCPS experienced a data breach which caused all students and staff to be locked out of their accounts. Students had to reset their password during the week of August 28, while staff had to reset it immediately. PGCPS were able to regain control of their systems within 12 hours, and sent a message to every student in the district about the cyber attack. Starting from the 2023–24 school year, clear backpacks are required for high school students and Non Traditional Program North, South and Middle and optional for middle school students to combat shooting in the district.

== As a defensive adaptation == The slime coat of reef fish contains mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) which protect the fish from sun damage by absorbing radiation. The greatest number of MAAs is found on the dorsal side of the fish, which is exposed to more radiation. Animals cannot synthesize MAAs, requiring fish to sequester them from their diet. Under water, fish are exposed to a greater number of microorganisms than animals whose skin is exposed mainly to air. In the absence of a stratum corneum, the slime coat serves to protect the fish from attack from harmful microorganisms. This is chiefly done by sloughing off microbes which become trapped in the slime coat, but the slime coat contains antimicrobial peptides and other defensive properties such as lysozyme and C-reactive protein. Parrotfish create extra mucus during sleep which covers their bodies in a cocoon-like structure. It protects them from predators and parasites by masking their scent and providing a physical barrier against them.
